This page provides links to professional organizations, associations, resources, and listservs that are directly involved with the library community and/or with serving children and young adults. The original links were selected for a LIBR 559 project by H. Moore, P. Kershaw, K. Cordiner, and V. Chan. (March 2000) K. Cordiner maintains the page and has added additional links.
American Association of School Librarians (AASL)
A division of the American Library Association, AASL is interested in the general improvement
and extension of school library services for children and young adults.
American Library Association (ALA)
The U.S. equivalent to the Canadian Library Association. Many extremely useful links to
resources for public librarians school librarians, and those directly involved with serving
children and youth.
Association for Library Services to Children (ALSC)
A division of the American Library Association, ALSC is devoted to promoting library services
for children. Links to news, awards, booklists, special projects, professional resources, and
web sites for kids.
BC Coalition For School Libraries
BCCSL is a group of concerned citizens, educators, businesses, and community groups who are working to improve school library programs in the province in order to advance literacy, culture, and student achievement through strong school library programs in British Columbia schools.
British Columbia Library Association (BCLA)
BCLA is a provinical organization dedicated to encouraging library organization and development
throughout the province of British Columbia. The BCLA home page provides links to news, jobs,
related associations, and events.
British Columbia Teacher-Librarians' Association
(BCTLA)
The BCTLA is the specialist organization of the BC Teachers' Federation concerned with school
libraries, cooperative planning, cooperative teaching, literature appreciation, resource-based
instruction and advocacy.

Canadian Association for School Libraries
CASL is an organization of educators and friends of school libraries in Canada. The home page provides links to Internet happenings, position papers, professional development, publications, awards, announcements, and directories. A division of the Canadian Library Association.
Canadian Library Association (CLA)
A national organization dedicated to the promotion, development and support of library and
information services in Canada.
International Association of School Librarianship
Look here for an international perspective on school libraries. There is a members only listserv.
International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA)
Hosted by the National Library of Canada, the IFLA website is an international association that
voices the concerns and interests of library and information services and their users. There
are more than 1500 members in over 140 countries around the globe.
Pacific Northwest Library Association (PNLA)
PNLA is an association of people who work in, with and for libraries and who live in the Pacific
Northwest provinces (British Columbia, Alberta) and states (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon,
Washington).
Vancouver Children's Literature Roundtable
The Roundtable is an assembly of enthusiasts who believe in quality literature for young people.
Members meet to discuss good books, attend children's literature events, and promote children's
literature. The web site includes links to other roundtables in BC.
VTLA
The Vancouver Teacher Librarians Association is the Vancouver chapter of BCTLA.
Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA)
A division of the American Library Association (ALA) devoted to promoting library services for
young adults. Links to news, awards, booklists, special projects, professional resources, and
web sites for teens.

Canadian Children's Illustrated Books In English
Judith Saltman is a recognized authority on Canadian children's literature. She is a professor in the School of Library Archival and Information Science at the University of British Columbia. She is chair of the Masters in Children's Literature program.

This site contains short stories arranged by genre. Both classic short stories and new stories appear on this site. You may submit stories for publication.
Guys Read
This site was created by a former teacher, now author, who is interested in promoting reading for boys. On a smaller scale, like Novelist, it allows students to search for books like, for favourite authors.
How Novel: Canadian Young Adult Literature
Select "Internet Resources" then "Literature and Writing." This site provides annotated bibliographies organized by genre. There are short author biographies.

Novelist organizes books by theme and age level. If you like a particular book, you can find other similar books on this service.
Online Literature Library

particular Aesop fable ends? You will find the answer here. The goal of
this site is to bring classic literature to a wider audience.

Canadian Poetry Archive
A digitized collection of English and French
Canadian poetry dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries. It features
over 1,500 poems by more than 100 early Canadian poets and includes

Canadian Review of Materials (CM)
Published by the Manitoba Library Association, CM is an electronic review journal. Reviews focus
mainly on Canadian materials in varied formats (books, audio, CD-ROMs, and videos. Also

Library of Congress
Among other things, this site provides access to LC's Online Catalog and a number of LC exhibits,
including the American Memory Project, the Vatican Library exhibit, and the Dead Sea Scrolls
exhibit.
National Library of Canada
A national resource, in English and en français. Highlights include an electronic collection,
National Bibliography, special services, sources of Canadian information, calendar of events,
and a virtual tour.
