ESL: WEB SITE EXPLORATION

INTRODUCTION

Who let the cat out of the bag? Keep your nose to the grind stone! Keep your eye on the ball! "I" before "E" except after "C". Do you find English confusing? Do we have a deal for you! Help is on the way.

The ESL page of the library web site has a list of Internet sites designed for ESL students. Some sites contain dictionaries and grammar helpers while other sites provide you with activities to improve your english. When you complete this activity you will be familiar with the content and organization of the sites. For information about the assignment proceed to Tasks.

• Prepare an annotation for one of the web sites.
• Present one of the web sites to the class.

PROCESS

1. During the first class explore at least five of the web sites listed on the ESL Page. Keep the following questions in mind.
   1. Why would you use this web site?
   2. How is the web site organized? Is it easy to navigate? (get around)
   3. Is there help or a contact -- a way to find out more?
   4. What is the content of the site?
   5. Are there good links to other sites?
2. During the second class select a site and prepare written answers for the questions listed in question one. In addition, answer the following questions.
   1. List some of the activities found on the site.
   2. Who is the author of the site?
   3. Prepare a citation for the site which includes:
      • The person or organization responsible for the site.
      • The title of the page.
      • The title of the site.
      • The date found on the site.
      • The address of the site.
      • The date that you accessed the site. (looked at the site)
3. Write a 50 to 100 word annotation (summary) for the site that would be useful for someone looking for ESL sites.
4. Prepare a three to five minute presentation of the site for your class.
